If you thought pineapples were only good for making pina coladas or as a Pinkberry topping, you are dead wrong.  Just check out Oliver Tolentino’s Spring/Summer 2010 Collection!  On October 15th, at LA Downtown Fashion Week at the Geffen Center at MOCA, Tolentino made use of natural, eco fibers which were unique and impressively green.  Originally from the Phillippines, Tolentino brought his native textiles to an entirely different level of design.  His sheer, mermaid gown made out of pina or pineapple fabric makes you feel as if you were just emerging from the sea on a clamshell, like the mythical Maganda or Beauty in English, the Eve of the Filipino creation myth.

The fabric is hand dyed, azure blue and flows like an ocean breeze.  Tolentino’s collection was filled with exotic silks, shimmering Swarovski crystals, and billowy chiffons.  One showstopping dress – a black and white silk and chiffon balloon – stood out from the rest of the collection and resembled a hat that Audrey Hepurn might have worn in Funny Face.  This dress I particular was more flamboyant than the other gowns which were simple and graceful.   Tolentino, well known throughout Southeast Asia for his wedding dresses, closed the Spring fashion show in the traditional European way with a wedding dress featuring an empire waist and extensive beading.  The dress was sheer perfection!  Even the most cynical fashionista would fall in love with this dress.
