Halloween: The Most Stylish Holiday?

Halloween costumes have unfortunately become the kind of outfits you expect to be unflattering. Especially considering they are usually made out of industrial materials making them a strictly one-time-use outfit.  While Halloween is rarely thought of a fashionable holiday, it is an “anything goes” night giving fashionistas a chance to experiment with more avant-garde ensembles.

Thinking of costume ideas for Halloween is never easy. I find that most of my October is spent browsing online or staring blankly into space trying to find that perfect costume. Unfortunately, my wit never comes through and I am left desperately rifling through bins at Party City on October 30th. Being that today is October 30th, I hope these costume ideas prevent you from doing the same.

Audrey Hepburn

A more conservative costume idea is fashion icon Audrey Hepburn. To create this look, all you need is a little black dress, elbow length black gloves, a pearl necklace, over-sized wayfarers and your hair done up. For the more ambitious, you may replace your purse with a Breakfast at Tiffany’s paper bag, just to clarify which Audrey Hepburn you are emulating.

Olivia Newton John

While Olivia Newton John’s character of Sandy from Grease is always a popular costume, a more alternative approach is the Olivia from her “Physical” music video. Fashionable leotards are available at American Apparel as are leg warmers and multi-colored neon tights.

penny

Kate Hudson stirred viewers everywhere with her unforgettable portrayal of (stylish) band-aide Penny Lane. For this costume, pick up her signature fur jacket, loose-fitting hip hugger jeans and bohemian shirt (or for a more glamorous look, a seventies looking mini dress).

Diva

Sequins are back and so is the diva attitude, so why not embrace this change of pace with a Diva costume. Free People offers an array of sequined mini dresses and skirts that when paired with sky-high heels and an afro, scream sassy diva.
