In the ’70s, Los Angeles was swept away with the ideals, art and music of the Summer of Love. Musicians such as Janis Joplin, The Dead, and Jimi Hendrix dictated a movement and forward way of thinking along the California coast. It was in this realm of inspiration that Mitchell Binder, at the time fifteen years old, moved from Jackson, Mississippi to Los Angeles. Overwhelmed with creativity, Binder became a jewelry apprentice and quickly conceived his own line. Having met a variety of musician during his apprenticeship it was a natural connection that Binder should be inspired, and indeed, appeal to the rock and roll market.
Creating a unique style of chunky and oversized pieces, so that the jewelry could be seen from stage, it wasn’t long before biker-club started asking him to custom design rings and belt buckles. Binder, growing into his own unique style, became known for using edgy and different motifs, such as skulls, daggers, roses and crowned hearts. He also became recognized for incorporating leather with jewels and sterling silver.
Things took a negative turn when in the early ’90s Binder started to notice his jewelry being widely knocked off. He then left the jewelry line to pursue other creative outlets. Years later, his friends noticed his pieces being sold on ebay for astronomical prices. Taking note of the opportunity and the obvious demand, Binder picked up his tools and created King Baby, Queen Baby (the women’s line) soon followed. Staying true to his personal style of edgy, bulky and detail-specific pieces it was not long before musicians and bikers once again favored the hip brand. The likes of Usher, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Slash, Kid Rock, Jamie Foxx, and Paris Hilton have been known to rock King Baby not only during their concerts but in their daily life as well.
King Baby can be found world wide at Neiman Marcus and select boutiques, such as Scoop in New York City. To learn more head to www.KingBabyStudio.com
