Matthew Ames had the perfect venue for his designs. Simple white walls surrounded a gray cracked concrete floor that was to serve as his runway. As the lights dimmed and returned brightly, models walked out to only the sound of drumbeats. His collection was created to “celebrate the freedom, ease and simplicity of American design.” What followed was a presentation of clean solid pieces that explored the basic element of design…shapes. Silk short dresses were shown fitted to the body, short-sleeved jackets with broad shoulders extended outwards in a square shape, and harem pants hung loosely from the waist. Jumpsuits were shown cropped, sheer and/or with pockets. My favorites included a two-tone simple silk short-sleeved mini dress featuring a rich pink and green hue as well as a black jumpsuit that nipped in at the waist and plunged down in a deep v-neck. Matthew showed us that simple can be more than enough.
