Paper Magazine’s Fifth Annual Nightlife Awards & Rendezvous with Kate Squillace at Le Souk Harem

The Fifth Annual Nightlife Awards had to be one of the funniest events I have attended in years. I wasn’t aware Paper Magazine actually sponsored a ceremony which resembled “Bar Scene” mixed with Academy Awards.

There were interesting people floating around, some wearing “home made” fashions, while others came in costume, drag or some alien invasion “prêt-à-porter.” The always dapper André Balazs accepted an award for his Standard Hotel/Boom Boom Room with a simple “thank you very much” and swiftly exited stage left (think he was trying to run away from New York transvestite Lady Fag – yes, that’s his/her/his name).

There were speeches, proud recipients, accolades of achievement and two Swedish brand ambassadors from Absolut that wouldn’t drink the Svedka (sponsors for the event).I was on a tight schedule and barely had time to finish my second Svedka soda (I’m an equal opportunity beverage aficionado, especially when it’s free) before getting hailed from producer Chris Young to come and meet the lovely Kate Squillace from Bad Girls Club (she is actually a very nice girl, isn’t that ironic?)  I was able to catch up with Amanda Lepore on the way out who was, well, Amanda Lepore-ish. Mickey Boardman also caught my photographer’s eye, since his blazer resembled a “shiny disco ball,” difficult to miss.

Finally arriving at the new Le Souk Harem on LaGuardia Place, I noticed a white truck limousine longer that an MTA bus parked in front. Yes, Chris Young had arrived with Bad Girls Club member, Kate Squillace (she made her Victoria’s Secret dress look very appealing). Champagne and couscous followed (the chicken one is fantastic by the way) in the VIP area of Le Souk Harem, what could be more delish? Oh, the green apple hookah of course. Dancing darlings and rising starlings grooved to the hottest tunes from Europe, thanks to DJ Nesta B and so ended another bright night in the big city.  To be continued…
