Celebrity hairstylist Philip Pelusi, who is well known for his signature “Volumetric” haircutting technique, gives us the tips for achieving the volume we crave, abandoning the hair nightmares of the past.
1) Why does volume never go out of fashion?
Volume really never goes out of fashion, but it is the type of volume or the finish on the hair that goes in and out of style. Some amount of volume really compliments anyone. If someone wants to look younger, thick, voluminous hair helps achieve that. If someone wants to look alluring and sexy, voluminous hair does that for you. But what goes in and out of style is the type of volume such as either a soft or a crunchy finish.
2) When it comes to getting the ’80s look for 2010, what is the worst
thing you can do?
Steer clear of short puffy bangs, a too crunchy finish, too stiff, too evenly curled hair. To have modern “big” hair, bangs can be softly swept to the side but don’t style shorter bangs in the big rounded shape that truly belongs in the 1980’s. Also keep hair on the soft side. Create a softer, just-from-the-beach look, with texture but nothing crunchy. Steer clear of hardening mousses or gels. Also make curls and waves uneven to be modern. Curling them in different sizes and in different directions.
Make sure the curls stay touchable and moveable. Avoid the helmet hair. To create more modern big hair, look for more modern products that are resin free. Resins are what create that crunch stiff look and feel to the hair. Modern big hair is soft to the touch and moveable.

3) Who do you think (celebrity wise) does the best full volume hair?
Gisele, Angelina Jolie, Eva Mendes — they all wear very modern soft tousled
sexy voluminous hair.
4) What do you think is the appeal of volume hair? Is it sexier?
Most definitely. Volume always says sexy, anti-aging and healthy. When worn
with a dressy dress or evening type outfit it can also perfect for a dressy evening too.
5) Can anyone get big hair?
Different types of hair fabrics have different needs. If hair is finer and straight, it will need the most help to get volume. Use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner to build texture and strength. This will help hold a set better. If hair already has a lot of wave and body it will need a bit of frizz control to create today’s smooth modern big hair look. Hair also needs a modern grooming product to create a soft texture, sexy beach hair look.

Three steps to voluminous hair:
Step one: Apply massive amounts of mousse to hair.
Step Two: Blow dry and tease till freshly electrocuted look has been achieved.
Step Three: Use entire can of ‘Will Not Move in Case of Sudden Tornado’ Extra Strength Hair Spray. This was the recipe for the once coveted ‘Big Hair’ look of the 80’s.
Today, women approach hair glory and the search for volume with a desire for a softer, healthier, natural aesthetic.
