London correspondent Fiona McCoss investigates SHOWstudio, the next big thing in design “reality.”

A bit like Swine Flu, Reality TV is a vastly spreading super-bug that is slowly but surely plaguing the nations, penetrating the population one by one and infecting even the most healthy and normal of human beings. Continuously growing in America, the reality bug has crossed the pond and has hit Britain; tightening its grip over the past decade.

These days we Brits go weak at the knees for anything “live” and potentially “celebrity” centred. We’re glued to our sets, scheduling our diaries around the weekly slots of X-Factor and Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. And whatever the psychoanalytical reason behind it, it works. Reality TV is clever and addictive; yet unlike Swine flu, more often than not it’s a positive thing – not to mention a “popular” thing.

This idea is exactly what the British mastermind and award-winning designer Gareth Pugh decided to utilize in order to promote the new and exclusive collaboration between himself and photographer Nick Knight for the SHOWstudio SHOP. And we’re already hooked, just watch this space…

A bit Big Brother-esque, Pugh left his Parisian home where he resides (and works) and has been holed up in the Live Studio Space at the Bruton Place Store, Mayfair for 3 days this November subject to webcams which recorded his every stitch and cut as he created a unique couture dress especially for the public.

During the 20th, 23rd and 24th of November Gareth Pugh set to work; allowing a normal “day at the office” to be captured by little cameras, recording his genius online as he toiled from 11am-6pm GMT in his new, temporary London studio. Never one to be conventional, the young innovative designer has yet again thrilled his fans and followers of the fashion world, propping the door open for a view into his private world of creativity and inspiration. It is a groundbreaking, exciting and inspiring idea in which Pugh wished to unify consumer, product and designer in the process of inspirational creation ─ more documentary than trashy TV comp.

The eccentric British designer recently debuted his Spring 2010 collection in Paris, which displayed his signature grey and monochromatic shades, nonsensical shapes and futuristic simplicity, which may perhaps give some indication of what’s to feature in his handcrafted,
“one size fits all,” one-of-a -kind garment…You won’t want to miss a second!
