They followed on the heels of modern travel and were carried by royalty and celebrities alike. Style, quality and durability were the main goals and after decades, these pieces are still cherished and revered by the fashion press and customers the world over. MCM is a brand synonymous with classic luxury travel pieces.

Intended for “passionate travelers who have the globe at their fingertips,” these items are truly unique. They are meant for the seasoned vacationers of the world with “top quality leather, hardware, linings and fastenings.” They are even tested to make sure they are up to the task of being thrown in and out of 747 jets.

Often such sturdiness comes with a catch, as one must sacrifice beauty for functionality. However, with MCM this is certainly not the case (as you can see in our resort-wear yacht photo shoot!) Their iconic diamonds interlaced with the traditional MCM logo atop a classic cognac-colored leather is not only gorgeous, but it will also never go out of style and never ever be lost amid the sea of black suitcases.

For the Fall/Winter 2009 collection, MCM has presented a line with the expected logo-ed luggage with a bit of color mixed in. MCM is more than just incredible travel pieces, they also create fabulous handbags and shoes as well as other small leather goods for women and men.

This season’s totes will be sure to stand out among the crowd in “eye-popping colors” such as bright blue hues. Their iconic prints will get spiced up with contrasting piping and yummy crocodile and snakeskin will make a wonderful addition to the leather as they adorn purses and hobos in shades of purple and orange. These bags will get a slight edge with chain-link straps and silver-stud accents. Nylon logo-ed duffels will also be available for purchase.

MCM is also creating a special exclusive collection that is to debut in Saks and the MCM Boutique at the Plaza Hotel. It will be called MCMNewYork and consist of adorable clutches, boho-chic slouchy hobo bags and other styles, all in a delicious softer-than-soft leather. If you are looking for something classic, something that can be passed down to future generations and something that will look fabulous with any airport outfit, then MCM is definitely the collection for you. It was a favorite brand of the sexy superstar Diana Ross…

It’s funny how brand awareness works. One day someone brings a brand to your attention and then you start seeing it, if not everywhere then at least noticeably so. This is true for me of MCM. I attended a showcase of the MCM Spring 2009 collection of bags and luggage in the W Hotels Lounge at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week here in New York. Although I saw many varied styles in the signature logo print in both cognac and black throughout the city in the days following, I noticed one discreet leather style in particular in the hands of some very discerning ladies on Park Avenue, Wall Street, and even Times Square.
